Honoring My Son Matt on Memorial Day

Matthew and Legend

I want to honor my son Matthew Slaydon on this Memorial Day. Matt is Air Force Special Forces, EOD, (bomb squad) now retired. He volunteered for a 3rd tour in Iraq and he was doing his work of making Iraqis safer in Baghdad by defusing roadside bombs.  As he examined a suspicious area for a bomb, a buried device was set off possibly remotely by someone in the crowd. The blast took his eyes and an arm and put him in the hospital at death’s door for months, and over a year of surgeries and physical therapy. Matt, you are a hero in the truest sense of the word, not because you were hurt, but because you knew the risk, and you took it, and now you embrace the changes and choose life as the new Matt. This day is for you. I am proud to be your Mom and you are the best of all of us.

  1. Hi Carolyn, that was beautiful and yes he is a hero! God Bless!! My husband was in Nam as a medic and although he really doesn't talk much about it I can only imagine the pain and suffering he saw while he was there. God Bless all the men and women who serve and protect us so that we may have our freedom!

  2. Carolyn, I come from a family of military personnel, luckily none have physical wounds so I relate to this. I just truly don't understand war. I wish Matt all the best and would love to hear more of his story of readjustment as I try to help many in the same situation as Matt.

  3. Carolyn, Matt is very much a hero, and sacrificed much to serve his country ~ I was saddened to read of his injuries, and hope that he continues to progress better and better with each day. (My son also looks to serve his country following high school and college.) Thank you for sharing this…I found it to be very touching. Christine

  4. Hi Carolyn
The price that our men and women have paid to keep us and others safe…I'm not sure if there is words…
Thank you Matt for your hard dedicated work. Your life forever has been changed, but I want you to know that I thank you from the bottom of my heart for your dedicated service, if it wouldn't be for people like you we would NOT be living in a free country today.

I have 3 uncles, my day (who died when I was 10) and my step dad who all fought in World War 11 to keep this country Free!

  5. Carolyn,
Whew! What an incredible sacrifice your son endured. I'm so thankful that he survived and is with you today. There are no words that can adequately convey how much his service means to us. Thanks from the bottom of my heart for sharing his story. I'd love to know how he is doing today!

  6. Hi Carolyn, this is the first time visiting your blog. How is Matt doing? Is he home now with you? I can't imagine what he is going through. I can't imagine what you're going through as a mom… my blessings to you and Matt and I am honored to know you. I am in awe what he sacrificed for our country. I hope he is doing well…

  7. Thank you for sharing your Son's story and tell him that I thank him for his service, my family supports our troops, my cousin is a Marine and as of today started his second tour over seas, he did one tour in Iraq and just got to Afghanistan, I and my family appreciate you and your son.

  8. Hi Carolyn,
Your son is a true hero, and a fine example to all people young and old. I wish some of these overpaid sports and movie stars could read this post. Maybe and just maybe they might not end up in rehab by believing their own publicity.

Thank you for sharing this and wish your son well for me.

    Keep smiling

    Chris 🙂

  9. It is because of the incredible self sacrifices of men and women like Matt that we are the free people we are today. My thanks and a hug to him, and my deepest of respects for all the men and women that have served to protect us and others.

  10. Hi Carolyn,

I am so glad you still have your son.
That would have been a difficult time for you.
Great to know that he is doing well and choosing life and has Legend to help him.
    Love and Light
