Blog Syndication: Make it Easy For Your Readers

Blog Syndication
Blog syndication: What exactly is it? When we are blessed with a visitor who reads our content, it is a special gift if they want to tell others about our post. This is syndication, putting out content out on the net for others to read too. And this gets our posts backlinked and builds our visibility and traffic. It behooves us to help our visitors to syndicate quickly, easily, and without needing any special technical expertise. How can we make it easy?
WordPress blogs are perfect for syndication because of the huge selection of plugins we can add with a few clicks. The live buttons you see surrounding posts that link to different social media sites are generated by these plugins. Click on Plugins in your WP Dashboard, then at the top of your Manage Plugins page, click Add New; type in the name or keywords related to what you are looking for, install, activate and it’s nearly done!
Now set up your new button’s function. Click on Settings toward the bottom of your left Dashboard column, click the name of the plugin to open up setup. (A few plugins have a settings link in the actual Manage Plugins page list.) Plugins have their own sites too for help if you need it.
Here is a list of my favorites:
- Digg This O’ Mine
- fbLikeButton
- Simple Facebook Share Button
- OnlyWire for WordPress
- ShareThis
- WP Google-buzz
- TweetMeme Retweet Button
There is a little bit of overlap here but that’s alright because people have different preferences. The Google Toolbar has a Share button available which includes the Ping.fm button. Ping.fm is very valuable because like Onlywire, it can post to multiple sites at once. I set up my Ping account to post to sites that Onlywire either doesn’t serve, or suffer repeated failures posting. Syndicate a post to Ping with a single click, right from the Share button on your browser’s Google Toolbar.
Let me focus a moment on Tweetmeme. I LOVE this retweet button! It is small, and can be set to sit to the top right of your post. I do a lot of syndication of other’s blogs, and I notice this important button is often missing. It is easy to see, and makes it quick for your reader to Tweet just as they start reading. Do yourself and your readers a favor and install the Tweetmeme plugin now. It is easy to set up. Just put in your Twitter username and it’s good to go.
So, make it easy on your readers to syndicate your blog posts. Add enough buttons at the top and bottom so they have their familiar choices. One note about Digg…Digg your post first yourself. It is a bit of work creating the first Digg; save your readers that trouble so they can just Digg it! And pop in the TweetMeMe button today and watch your Twitter traffic grow.
Wishing you wild success!

Good post mom! This concept should help people realize and it did me, that if you want traffic flowing to your blog then you should be sending traffic out for others. This syndication is a good way to build relationships with those you are interested in. I believe I was first introduced to this by Katie Fryling!
Carolyn,
Thanks so much… and wow, we agree with you. Sometimes it’s quite difficult to syndicate a blog post, and that is frustrating. People will be more likely to syndicate your content if it’s simple and there aren’t a lot of steps to get it done.
Thanks,
~ Pat and Lorna

The TweetMeMe is one of my personal favorite plugins for my blog. It is very easy to use and is a great tool. Thanks for the suggestions on other plugins as well. A couple I hadn’t heard of that I will have to check out!

Carolyn, All your tips are spot on! Making it easy for your visitors is paramount! I have been on blogs that are sort of difficult and found that I just did not get the job done! Your blog is very easy to syndicate, it is a nice clean layout. Thanks for the great post! ~ Joseph McDevitt
Hi Caroly,
Thanks for this very informative posting. I agree with you, blogs should be easy to syndicate. I have tried to syndicate some blogs that had no bookmark & share button, I would then use it from my favorite.
I think your posting would be helpful to everyone. I’m working on changing my blog and would diffidently keep all of your suggestions and tips in mind.
Thanks for this posting, Carolyn.

Hey Carolyn,
Great post and what a good idea to let everyone (particularly those new to syndication) how to help other syndicators. We all want to get plenty done in a reasonable amount of time, so to have buttons there in easy reach makes it so much more efficient!
Thanks for sharing this!
Sue
A lot of people are completely clueless about syndication. Your post walks people through the process in a very easy to understand format. Well done!
Carolyn, Thanks for the suggestions. I will definitely check out tweetmeme and some of the others. I find some blogs so difficult to navigate and others, like yours, are so simple.
Carolyn,
Thanks for the reminder to get ping.fm up and running. Onlywire is good, but I agree with you that there are too many failures. I’ll use your suggestion and switch those over to ping.fm.
Hi Carolyn,
There are lots of different plugins out there for WordPress and it can be hard to work out which ones are the best. It always helps to have recommendations like yours to guide us.
A good tip about doing the first Digg too – thanks!
Vanessa
Yes You made a great point in your post, Carolyn, having those installed on your blog/website does make it a lot easier.
It seems that more and more people become aware of this.
When I started less than a year ago, it was all new and daunting to me. Now I understand it more and it actually is more fun than I thought.
Thanks for your article.
Have a fantastic week/end.

Hello Carolyn,
Thanks for the great content. Blog syndication is obviously very important and the easier we can make for our readers to sharing our content, the more likely they are to do it.
You have provided a great selection of plugins in which one can use, to make this possible.
Thanks again,
Anthony
